Creating Fabric Scrolls

Description: In this workshop, we’ll explore how to build a layered textile panel that feels balanced, cohesive, and thoughtfully composed. Rather than focusing on special techniques or surface effects, this class centers on how elements work together—how fragments relate, where the eye travels, and how negative space and restraint can give a piece quiet strength.

We’ll begin by preparing the fabric base for the panel. From there, we’ll move into selecting and arranging fabrics for the first structural layer, considering focal areas, spacing, rhythm, and visual weight. Through guided discussion and informal critique, you’ll refine your layout before anchoring layers with your sewing machine. We’ll explore how to build visual interest without clutter, so the piece feels resolved rather than busy, and how to pace the addition of second-layer elements to maintain clarity and intention.

The final portion of the workshop will focus on refinement and resolution, including:

Optional third-layer additions such as hand stitching, beading, or small dimensional elements

Edge treatments that give the panel a more finished and intentional presence

Simple and creative options for hanging or displaying your work

This class is designed for those who already have basic sewing skills and are ready to think more deeply about composition. You’ll leave with a structured textile panel in progress and a framework for seeing and building your work going forward.

Materials Instructor Brings:

Assorted yarns and fibers for optional edge treatment

A variety of small fabric fragments available for sharing

Two ironing stations (in coordination with guild equipment)

Materials Student Brings:

Equipment

Basic sewing machine in good working order (must know how to operate it)

Extension cord (clearly labeled)

Basic sewing supplies: thread (any color), scissors, pins, needles (hand & extra machine), fabric marker, rotary cutter and mat

Note: no glue or fusibles are used

Base Fabric

One piece of muslin or white/off-white cotton fabric measuring approximately 24–30 inches long and 13 inches wide (This will serve as the foundation for your panel.)

Fabric & Layering Materials

Bring a selection of small to medium fabric pieces suitable for layering. This is an excellent opportunity to use “fodder” created in previous technique classes, such as dyed, marbled, or surface-designed fabrics. Small stitched samples (machine or hand), fragments from earlier experiments, and personally meaningful textile scraps are welcome.

You do not need large yardage for this class. However, bring a few pieces large enough to cut into two or three related sections to create continuity within your panel. Most pieces used are 3” x 4” or smaller. Think about whether you want a subject or color theme.

Consider choosing a loose guiding idea for your panel. This might be a color narrative, a small collection of textile fragments with personal meaning, or a theme such as nature, memory, family, place, or artistic exploration. A gentle focus will help your composition feel intentional while still allowing room for discovery.

Panel Suspension: At the end of this class we will discuss various options for suspending your panel, a step you will finish at home. If you are interested in using a vintage spool, I have had good luck finding them on Etsy.

Curveball: A Mixed Media Experimentation Game

Description:

Research shows that artists make better work when given obstacles to overcome and problems to solve. In this game-style workshop, you'll draw random constraints and use them to push past your comfort zone in mixed media.

Before the workshop, you'll receive two handouts: the game instructions and a mixed media guide covering a range of techniques — some familiar, some you may never have tried. I strongly encourage everyone to work through the brainstorming section of the GAME INSTRUCTIONS (2 pages only in bullet point) at home before the workshop — the more you put in upfront, the more you'll get out of the day. We'll walk through the highlights of the mixed media handout together, then you'll choose your medium, draw your constraints, and get to work. Sarah will be there throughout to troubleshoot, demonstrate, and help you find unexpected solutions. At the end of the session, participants who want feedback can opt into a scored critique using a structured rubric.

Materials Instructor Brings:

Everything you need, including curveball items, heavy body acrylic, water-soluble oils, watercolors, colored pencils, graphite, charcoal, soft pastels, a variety of papers, fabrics, yarn, string, stuffing, fibers, hand sewing needles, acrylic polymer, PVA glue, and more.

Materials Student Brings:

Bring scissors.

Anything you want to use. If you have a preferred paint or palette or a sewing machine you are attached to, bring it.

Junk Journals: Structures and Creation

Description: Why create a Junk Journal? It is a fun, creative process that uses minimal tools and incorporates materials that would otherwise be discarded. These journals serve as excellent places to store tutorials, formulas, trial pieces, photos, and ideas. They can be unique art pieces or thoughtful gifts.

This class is suitable for all skill levels. Beginners will be guided through the process, while experienced participants are invited to experiment with a variety of materials. Packets containing all necessary supplies will be provided.

In the morning, we will create common structures such as tags, pockets, and belly bands, mounting them into a soft-cover journal for your future reference. In the afternoon, we will construct a hard cover and begin the final creation of your journal. You may choose between a themed packet—containing focal images, postcards, and stickers—or select from a wide variety of "junk" materials.

As this is a slow, creative process, you may not fully complete the decoration of your journal during class time. However, all supplies will be available for you to take home to finish your project.

Student to bring: Paper scissors and metal ruler would be helpful but not essential. Also, if desired, bring anything relatively flat that you would like to include (letters, photos, "things"
