Zen Rocks (wrapped rocks) are designs inspired by decorative knots on Japanese flower baskets. In Japanese, musubi means to connect or bind together as well as to pledge or promise. It is believed that when you tie things, a heavenly spirit will dwell within the knot to protect people.
In this class, you will receive instructions to do the following knots:
Interlocking “V”,
Girdled interlocking “V”,
Butterfly and double butterfly,
Cross knot,
Cross knot with spiral,
Cross knot with double spiral,
Turtle knot,
Cross-hatch designs,
Japanese eye,
Snake coil,
Stick wrap,
Stick wrap with spiral,
Stick wrap with wheat stitch or braid,
Loop the loop lace up.
You can select which knots to use on your rocks.
Here’s the items we will provide for the class –
· 5 rocks,
· 14 page instruction set with pictures,
· strands of each of the following weaving, materials:
o 3mm Hamburg cane, natural,
o 3mm flat-oval reed, natural,
o Wide cane, 1 natural and 1 dyed,
o Fine cane, 1 natural and 2 dyed,
o Bamboo stick/skewer,
o round reed,
o Hemp cording,
o Leather or faux suede lashing,
o Super glue,
o Work mat,
We will have a variety of samples of completed rocks as well as a binder of pictures of the wrapped rocks folks can use for ideas and inspiration.
Attendees may bring yarn, beads, charms, shells and other decorative items to use on the rocks. They can also bring additional rocks as the kit contains ample amounts of reed and cane.
