This workshop will focus on discharge (removing color) from hand dyed and commercial dyed fabrics using both an immersion bath and printing with thickened discharge products.
Immersion bath
We will be using thiourea dioxide (thiox) to discharge natural fiber cloth in an immersion bath. We will manipulate fabric - folding, binding, clamping, etc - and then discharge in a pot of thiourea dioxide (thiox). You will need to bring fabric that is already dyed, or is a solid color or 100% natural fibers, ie: cotton, linen, rayon, silk, hemp. Please note that not all colors discharge the same. Some colors do not discharge at all, even though it is a natural fiber So, please bring an assortment of fabrics to experiment with.
Printing with discharge
We will use thickened discharge agents—bleach products and thickened thiox on natural fibers. Use stencils, thermofax screens, and stamps to create richly patterned fabrics. Will also experiment with discharging commercially dyed black fabric.
