  • Valerie S. Goodwin is a mixed media fiber artist and architect whose works of fine art are included in museum and private collections. Most of her work is inspired by a love of aerial views of landscapes and cities. Many of her quilts are based on maps.

Goodwin’s art has moved through various stages from traditional quilting to an interest in abstract expressionism and, currently it is inspired by real and imaginary landscapes and cities. In some cases, her work shows an architectural sense of space with an archaeological perspective. In others, the network of the city and its built form is more prominent. These compositions work on several levels, from close up and far away as if one was looking at it from above.

Important Note: Because this class will require students bring a map of their chosen favorite place, some pre-planning and communication with each student will be required so that each person brings a map that can be used in this workshop.

    Pre-Workshop Requirements:

    1. Students are asked to bring hard copy maps of a place that has meaning for them. Take your file (or hard copy map) to a copy shop such as Target Copy or Kinko's. They should be able to make black and white copies inexpensively on bond paper. You may want to get a few copies, of slightly different sizes to give you more options.

    2. The size of your completed map will be about : - 8.5” x 11

    3. **It will be important to email the instructor your prospective maps about 2 weeks before the workshop so that she can help you make choices. Her email address is valeriegoodwin@comcast.net

What is a Map?

map (map), mapped, mapping, n. 1. a drawing representing selected features of the earth's surface or part of it. 2. a map like drawing of anything: a highway way, a weather map.

Maps are intriguing as an art form and as a vehicle for artistic expression. They are personal explorations of map language and imagined landscapes. Through satellite imagery sites like Google maps -- almost any place can be translated into an exquisite mixed media Cartographic Quilt. Name a favorite place. Is it in your city, your state, the USA or somewhere far away? In this class, you can design a cartographic map of a favorite location such as your residence or birth place. Discover the possibilities of creating a map from fabric, paint and thread! Using a fun and simple series of painted and collaged, mixed- media techniques, you will create a mixed media fiber art map. The instructor will guide you through a series of steps that will provide opportunities to learn about design while giving you the freedom to experiment within a structured framework.

Important Note: Because this class will require students bring a map of their chosen favorite place, some pre-planning and communication with each student will be required so that each person brings a map that can be used in this workshop.
