Encaustic/Mixed Media Journals

We will explore working with collage techniques to create a 4x5 journal using encaustic medium. Encaustic is a medium of melted beeswax mixed with damar resin that is painted on a panel and heat fused. We will cover the dos and don'ts of working with encaustic medium, and then incorporate collage techniques as the base of your journal cover. You will learn how to use stencils, ephemera, pan pastels, and oil sticks with encaustic medium.
After completing the covers, we will bind signatures (your pages) to your newly created encaustic covers using a single needle Coptic stitch. The end result will be a beautiful, one-of-a-kind handmade Journal.
Materials Instructor Brings:
Journal covers and pages, inside cover for journal, encaustic medium, brushes for medium, paints, pan pastels, oil sticks, thread and needles.
Materials Student Brings:
-Lightweight objects to embed: Any ephemera that you would like to use, such as feathers, leaves, small beads, small shells, lightweight papers, including interesting napkin designs, fabric etc.
- NO papers painted with acrylic. Acrylic paint and encaustic medium don't mix. If you have a painted image you want to use, copy it onto plain copy paper.
-An awl, bone folder, black roller pen, watercolor paints, brush for watercolor, any stencils you may want to use. (if you don't have any of these items there will be some available at the workshop)
